Ariki and the Humming Pounamu

Koro Wiremu

Ariki discovers a tiny, humming pounamu stone hidden inside the bark of his favourite pōhutukawa tree by the beach. Recognizing that the stone shares the exact same gentle rhythm as the incoming tide, he feels a deep sense of wonder and connection. Jirrily the soft-shelled turtle shares a special seed of patience and Country with her grandchildren, Kael and Lira. Together, they plant it by the billabong, care for it daily, and learn the value of waiting and storytelling before an emerald-green sprout finally breaks the soil.

Kiko, a very loud parrot on an island, tries to join the village choir but is told his booming squawk is too loud. After discovering he can make soft, rhythmic lullaby sounds to comfort a crying baby, he finds his own unique musical purpose within the community.

In a quiet garden, an old taro plant notices that the smallest pīwakawaka cannot find shelter from the gentle rain because the best spots are taken. The wise taro grows a massive new leaf to protect the tiny bird, demonstrating deep care and community. Safe and dry beneath the giant leaf, the small bird rests contentedly.
